Re: Pickleball Locations and Cost Estimates
Parks and Recreation Board Meeting, November 19, 2020
Agenda Item:
Discuss and provide direction concerning dedicated Pickleball Court(s) locations in Town and cost
estimates. (T. Jaramillo).
Strategic Link:
Nature and Beautification: Improve the aesthetic and recreational value of the Town.
Background and Explanation:
The pickleball players in town presented their interest in the construction of new pickleball
courts at the February 25, 2020 Town Council meeting and at the January 20, 2020 Parks and
Recreation Board meeting and continue to express their interest for dedicated Pickleball courts.
Staff has noticed a higher than usual usage of the courts within the last four months and
discovered that the usage between tennis and pickleball players are approximately a 60/40 split
with pickleball players being the heavier user group. This does not include private lessons
currently being offered at both facilities, which vary on a daily basis.
Staff was provided direction at the September 21, 2020 meeting to research the following
information:
- Locations and cost estimates for dedicated pickleball courts in town
- Percentage of court usage between tennis and pickleball players
- Prepare and provide a block schedule for additional pickleball usage
Park and Recreation Board Page 10 of 11 Meeting Date: Thursday, November 19, 2020
Page 2 of 2
Financial Considerations:
Option A: A minimum of eight pickleball courts designed to fit comfortably at the southeast
location of Independence Park East. The approximate cost per court is $50,000 each, lights
included. This option will accommodate daily play, weekend clinics and tournament play.
Tournament play for an average of 12 courts could generate approximately $27,000 per year in
revenue or approximately 54% Return on Investment over a 10 year period.
Other potential costs:
- Consultant fees
- Cabana benches, $4,000 each
- Bleachers for spectators, 15,000 each
- Drinking fountain, $8,000
- Rental of large grandstands - $10,000 each rental
Option B: Four pickleball courts can be installed at Independence Park West south of the existing
tennis courts. The approximate cost per court is $40,000 each, lights included. This option would
accommodate most daily play for our citizens. However, it would not be large enough to host
tournaments.
Other potential costs:
- Cabana benches, $4,000 each
- Drinking fountain, $8,000

Sub-Committee Recommendation:

Staff Recommendation
After discovering that the courts in town are being utilized constantly by various groups, staff
recommends moving forward with option A to accommodate both daily play and tournaments
generating future revenues.
