CLUB, TEXAS, ESTABLISHING APRIL 21-27 AS TV -TURNOFF WEEK IN
TROPHY CLUB TO COINCIDE WITH THE TV -TURNOFF WEEK 2003.
WHEREAS, this program is designed to empower parentsand families to break
free of TV in their own homes by providing practical tools and techniques for turning off
the TV; and
WHEREAS, during this ninth annual Turnoff, millions of children and adults
across the nation and around the world will take a seven-day break from the television
and rediscover that life can be more fun, rewarding, and even relaxing when we do more
and watch less. For many, the Week will become the springboard to making lasting
changes in their lives: watching less television, choosing what they do watch more
selectively, and engaging in more screen -free activities; and
WHEREAS, the appeal of TV -Turnoff (Week crosses ideological and partisan
boundaries. It is as universal as the desire to raise healthy, happy children; and
WHEREAS, TV -Turnoff Week is organized each year by TV -Turnoff Network.
TV -Turnoff Network is a national nonprofit organization which encourages children and
adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities;
and
WHEREAS, in addition to TV -Turnoff Week,` TV -Turnoff Network created and
runs More Reading, Less TV, an acclaimed program designed to get grammar school
children to put down their remote controls and pick up books. ` Additionally, their

and family time.
WHEREAS, this Week is a great opportunity to rediscover life's simple, non-
electronic pleasures; and
WHEREAS, the National Fatherhood Initiative is proud to support TV Turnoff
Week because it encourages all parents, including fathers, to spend quality time talking to
and strengthening their relationships with their children; and

engage in consumption and to believe that greater material possessions can be equated
with increasing happiness, a week away from television will give people a break from a
major source of these messages. Best of all, a week away from "television may convince
people to reduce television viewing the other 51 weeks of the year; and

time to consider and reflect on important ideas and issues, free of TV interruptions; and
WHEREAS, it is a wonderful opportunity for families to re -connect with each

potentially damaging effects of excessive television viewing ... Children can be taught
to be critical viewers and to :appreciate the value of family time, away from the television
set; and,
WHEREAS, we urge every American to get off the couch and get into their
communities; and
WHEREAS, the enthusiasm expressed by parents and children over the
principles of this program speak volumes about the importance of communication and the
need to encourage it. Communication within families promotes children's mental health.
while at the same time strengthening families and preventing violence; and
