A PROCLAMATION OF THE TOWN COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF TROPHY
CLUB, TEXAS, SUPPORTING SEPTEMBER 2021 AS SUICIDE PREVENTION
AWARENESS MONTH.
WHEREAS, the past year has presented our communities with challenges and led to
transitions that were expected or unexpected, unsettling, and stressful; and
WHEREAS, Americans attempt suicide an estimated 1.4 million times annually; and 130
Americans die by suicide each day, with over 20 being our country's Veterans, equating to 47,000
deaths by suicide a year; and
WHEREAS, more than 1.6 million years of life are lost to suicide and the combined medical
and work-loss costs in the United States is $70 billion per year; and
WHEREAS, suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death in the United States, the second
leading cause of death for ages 15-34 and the fifth leading cause of death for ages 45-54; while
Veterans comprise over 14 percent of suicides; and
WHEREAS, more teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart
disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung diseases combined;
and
WHEREAS, in the United States, 90 percent of those who die by suicide had a diagnosable
psychiatric disorder at the time of their death; and
WHEREAS, organizations, such as American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, National
Institutes of Mental Health, Veterans in Crisis, Suicide & Crisis Center of North Texas, and
GallantFew provide research, resources and support in order to spread awareness and prevent
suicide.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MAYOR ALICIA L. FLEURY, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
TROPHY CLUB TOWN COUNCIL, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM:
SEPTEMBER 2021 AS SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH
PASSED AND APPROVED by the Trophy Club Town Co cil this 13th da f September 2021.
