Agenda Packet TC 10/09/2018 - Supplemental ItemTOWN OF TROPHY CLUB 1 Diophy Wood Dive I Rophy Club, TX 76262 1 682.237.2900 Town Council Meeting October 9, 2018 Supplemental Item Citizen Presentations TCR Youth Baseball 15U+ Trophy Club City Council Citizens Presentation f October 9, 2018 What are we asking for? /fJ11 m)'O" • Once a player with TCR Youth Baseball reaches the "league age" of 15U, there are no longer any options for them to play recreational baseball • If you don't make the Byron Nelson team, you can either play select baseball (non-TCR teams) or you quit playing • We are asking the Trophy Club Town Council in helping these kids with an option to continue playing baseball for TCR • Does TCR really want these boys wearing green to represent Southlake? Neither do the boys or their parents. Basic Information • Today, TCR provides baseball from Beginning Tee Ball through 14U • Practice fields utilize Indy West and both sets of fields in Roanoke • For 14U, only Indy West #4 is utilized • A small % of freshmen players will make the Byron Nelson team (about 15 on an average year) • Based on the past, many of these 15 kids do not even play for TCR • This fall, there is (1) 13U Select team, (3) 14U Select team and (2) Rec 14U teams. • Solely using Field 4, there are 10 Monday through Friday 1.5 hour practice slots and at least 10 on Saturday & Sunday (primarily utilized prior to the start of the season) Why have we not had 15U & older `fff11" • Despite past requests, we have been told there is not enough room. • Based on TCR's website and communications from TCR, there are (4) select teams (1-13U, 3 —14U). There are 2 Rec teams • That means there are at least 2 spots open • (1) 14U team this season is not using any weekday spots • Could be more but all Friday times are blocked for Field #4 • There are currently (2) 7U teams taking up slots on Field #4 with practice which could be moved to other appropriate fields • I have talked to parents that have had interest in the past, but there has not been any support provided. • I was told TCR could not make a decision until signups were done for the 14U division • This is too late for the kids • Any options with other cities would already be closed at that point if TCR decided not to move forward • I know for practices, TCR also works with Roanoke and their different fields. • There is a field at Fairplay that is large enough for the older teams, but would just need a portable mound — has this been discussed by TCR Regional Landscape • 14U plays in a league called Interlock • Usually two divisions • TCR division traditionally is made up of TCR, Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville & Coppell f/ffldJtl 00404y/ 41 • Of those cities, TCR is the only league that has NEVER sponsored teams older than 14U • Teams range from 15U, 16U & 18U • A 15U player could technically play 15U, 16U or 18U • Southlake, Grapevine & Colleyville all have Fall teams and some will have multiple teams in different age divisions in the spring • For instance, Southlake will play 15U, 16U & 18U typically in the spring • Teams in the other Interlock division from TCR also have 15U+ teams • Flower Mound • Highland Village • Actually have had players playing through city and never for the high school teams that have gone on to play college ball • Denton Interest .rfsllrrr, • Utilizing this fall's 14U makeup as a guidance for numbers, there are roughly 45+ 14U kids • (3) 14U select teams & (2) 14U Rec teams • Estimated 56-59 total kids • Rec teams are a mix of 13U & 14U • Remember, only 15 freshmen on average make the Byron team • Poll taken with Spring `18 Rec teams, had interest from nearly 20 kids that graduated out of 14U that wanted to keep playing • Did not take into account kids that were playing Select through TCR • Does not take into account kids that would now be 16U or older Final Analysis Litt44r/rr„ • There is room on FieT77-and with some work with Roanoke, we could have plenty of options for practice. • There is plenty of interest to create these teams. • Why should the kids at TCR be left out when other cities in our league have made it happen? • Bottom line: We all want kids: • Spending less time with electronics • Interacting with kids in person • Getting exercise • Learning life lessons that can only be taught through team sports • Representing Trophy Club in a positive light LET'S PLAY BALL ! ! !
