2. Discuss and provide update regarding ongoing projects at Town Parks.
Freedom Dog Park: Director Jaramillo stated that the large dog area and small dog
area will switch sides from June 4 through July 2 in order to preserve the turf at the park
and the switching of sides is done on a biannual basis.
Community Pool: Director Jaramillo explained that one of the splash cannons at the
splash pad has been removed in order to reinstall the "Dumpin Buccaneer", the pool is
fully staffed and will open this weekend (Saturday, May 26).
Independence Park: Director Jaramillo stated there are no updates to be made at this
time.
Town Medians: Director Jaramillo mentioned that almost all summer annuals have
been planted in the Town medians and the Parks Department should be finished
planting by the end of the week.
Trophy Club Park: Director Jaramillo stated that a Disc Golf Tournament was held at
Trophy Club Park two weeks back and mentioned there were 200 players that
participated.
Recreation: Director Jaramillo stated that the department continues to receive a steady
flow of parade applications and 5K registrations for the 4th of July. Director Jaramillo also
mentioned that the Town's Summer Adventure Camp is fully staffed and is continuing to
accept registrations.
3. Discuss and provide information on taking a tree inventory at all town
parks/common areas and medians.
Chairwoman Nimphius asked the back story of the tree inventory and Director Jaramillo
stated that many cities do this and by taking an inventory of all Town owned trees
(Harmony Park, Independence, medians, etc.) it will allow for important information such
as knowing the age of the tree and the condition of the tree from a liability standpoint
that can be logged into an application that will also have a GPS component.
Chairwoman Nimphius asked if the process is comparable to an RFID tag. Director
Jaramillo agreed and explained the inventory information can be presented to council in
the case that a Town tree needs to be replaced. Board Member Davis stated that there
should be a baseline inventory of all trees in Trophy Club that was taken a few years
back. Director Jaramillo explained he will look into that however, many trees have been
removed and replaced in the past couple years. Director Jaramillo suggested due to the
extent of the project that Park Board, or a different committee that is volunteer based
help take inventory at the parks and that staff be responsible for the Town medians.
Chairwoman Nimphius stated that the tree inventory is a great concept and that similar
requests were made at the Town's Back To Nature event. Director Jaramillo suggested
reaching out to the local Boy Scouts, Chairwoman Nimphius asked Board Member Davis
to find the contact of the horticulture club at Byron Nelson High School.
4. Discuss and take appropriate action creating and naming a volunteer group for
the flower beds at Trophy Club Park beautification area.
Director Jaramillo stated the maintenance of the flower beds at Trophy Club Park
reflects on the Town even though the area is not owned by the Town. Director Jaramillo
explained that residents want to rent the Trophy Club Pavilion however it is not
aesthetically pleasing and that there have been volunteers in the past to help maintain
the area but will not continue the upkeep. Board Member Davis asked if this area was
previously maintained by the Women's Club, Director Jaramillo acknowledged. Board
Member Davis asked why the relationship ended and Chairwoman Nimphius stated she
believed the club fizzled out. Chairwoman Nimphius suggested reaching out to the same
types of groups as the ones mentioned for the tree inventory project. Vice Chair Bone
asked if the supplies for upkeep with be provided by the town and Director Jaramillo
replied that all supplies would need to be donated from the group who volunteers to
maintain the area.
Director Jaramillo provided information on Trophy Club Park annual passes and stated
from October to date there have been 106 annual resident passes sold and 164 annual
non-resident passes sold.
5. Discuss and provide an update on new recreational leagues.
Director Jaramillo stated the Parks and Recreation Department budgeted for a flag
football league this fall and mentioned that the league will run 5-6 weeks with a
championship game at the end. Director Jaramillo explained the league will play 7 on 7
with 2 referees per game but a location has not yet been determined.
Director Jaramillo mentioned that discussions are still being had about an adult
basketball league and Chairwoman Nimphius explained it may be difficult to run a
basketball league because Roanoke runs a league that is very popular and that most
people play over there.
6. Discuss future agenda items.
Director Jaramillo requested that the next Park Board Meeting take place on Monday,
July 16 due to the staff preparing for the 4th of July event and that there would be more
to update on following the event.
